One of the estheticians in my doctor's office went there and LOVED it. She could not say enough about the school and thought that they were very professional. I took a tour of the facility and found it to be very professional and an overall nice facility. They are always looking to add classes and keep up with changes in the industry. I was thinking about the school myself but am still not sure as to whether or not to go for a change in career yet. I hope this helps.

I'm thinking of taking both the Basic & Advanced make up courses at Christine Valmy In NYC. Has anyone taken them? Does the school help with job placement. Is it worth it or it is the same as a job at Sephora? Are there many openings for positions for a certified make up artist? I'm skeptical and confused...

Your questions are difficult to answer as makeup application is really a very general term which is used in a very wide variety of areas and require combination as well as specific skills. Some may require a certificate or a license. Some do not. In what areas do you want to work? Makeup Artist - Demonstrator (where you show customers how to apply and apply makeup) Commercial Makeup Artist - (where you are paid to apply makeup for a fee) Media Makeup Artist - Working with still Photography Theatrical Makep Artist - Designs and supervises actors for stage productions. Motion Picture and television Motion Picture and television Special Effects (FX) IMHO I've listed these in the order of level of knowledge and training (Beginning with the least to the most (which usually includes each above it)). In other words, if you are considering commercial, you would want to first have experience in Demonstrator as the skills learned will be an important part of Commercial Makeup Artistry.

Thanks for the response Jeff! I've always been into makeup, but I was never sure what I wanted to do with it. I really want to get into an esthetics program, but unfortunately, with the time and money it requires, I'm unable to go right now.

Jeff B I have seen many of your comments in my browsing the internet and value your opinions. Maybe you could help us with a decision. My daughter just graduated from college with a Visual Arts/Photography degree. Her dad is a Facial Plastic Surgeon with a Skin Care Department that could use a good photographer to better the over all program at the office..She could do before/after pictures of all procedures whether surgical, laser, Skin Care procedures, document cases, etc, etc. We would love to have a highly trained aesthetician in our medical office and she would love to live in New York for several months (possibly go to Christine Valmy) to further her education in that area. She could use laser training as well as training in Imaging to incorporate her photography. We have looked into the Texas area as well as Colorado..... (We live in Louisiana) You seem to be very knowledgeable and we were wondering if you have any suggestions to tie all these things together so we can be as organized as possible in this endeavor!

Hello, I am new to this board and I am trying to decide on a school to attend. I went to Atelier to check out the school and while they seem on the up and up I noticed there were some issues and frustrations going on amongst the staff as well as a lack of organization. I like the fact that they seem well versed in their curriculum, however I think I will check out Aveda as an alternative because I think that's more of my personality.. P.S Annette Hanson's picture is ALL over the place...diva
Go medical route, its more informative. You can always educate yourself with products, it is more lucrative to have a medical/ aesthetic background, which you can incorporate natural products as well. The difference is understanding the uses of the machines/equipment. I went to the carsten-aveda school with an understanding that i would become well informed of both. Well, I wasnt! So afterwards, I went to laser school and and an advance medical school to become diversified in several different modules of aesthetics. Good Luck, hope you found the right school!
What school did you go to for your advanced studies?

I'm currently attending Christine Valmy in NYC for the 600 hour Esthetics course and LOVE IT! I'm half way through the program and it's the best choice I made. I talked to people who went to both Altelier and Aveda. They said Altelier had a high drop out rate and Aveda made you work lots of extra hours that you didn't get credit for. I checked out Altelier and hated the school, it looked like a dungeon and when I was getting a tour I felt like the students were trying to stare holes into my body. CV just moved into a new location and is absolutely beautiful. Amazing views of the Empire State Building and NYC skyline from the clinic. The teachers and great and everyone is so friendly. The students are a diverse group. I'm learning a lot and really having fun. They are one of the NYC locations for the State Board Exams, and they also teach ITEC courses. I am very happy with my choice so far.
